What is RP?
RP is the shortened term for Roleplaying. No, I'm not going to end it there. Roleplaying has many forms from the uber geeks of D&D and the like, to the just normal geeks that do online text based roleplay such as we have here.
In text based roleplay, you build a character and come up with powers, should you chose to have them. Next you really find a good setting to have your character in. The interaction between the characters is what rp is all about. Rp is simply telling a story through text, while describing the actions and the character, along with what they are saying so as to play that characters distinctive role in the game.

Why RP?
The Why of rp is completely different for most people. Some people do it because their board, others because they like to write. However, most do it as their escape from reality into a world where they can be anyone they want. Do whatever they want. Its like reading a good book but you're there involved in the story. Real and true rp, is all about the escape from the monotony of everyday life, to go off to a far away place and time, to be someone, or something your not.

What was the original Purpose of RP?
This question could be debated until the end of time. Mostly the advent of RP Came about when a few D&D nerds were sitting around in a chat room talking about old characters they used to have and debating whose was better. In the end they decided to just have their characters duke it out. Naturally this system got a little rocky, but the concept of playing games like that online stuck.
Soon after it opened up to them building new characters just for the online playing and interacting as fighting took a back seat to the simple fun of the game. This slowly developed into the text based rp that we see today. Where the mixture of the real and unreal creates and almost seemless weave of fun interaction and creation.

How do I get Started?
The first thing you need to do is create a character for you to play as. The best thing for you to do when doing this is consider the setting and what kind of personality you have. For beginners it is best if you start playing a character that is very similar to you, personality wise. The next thing you need to do is figure out powers and what he looks like as well as a history for him.

That little list will help in the development of all the characters you want to build. If you have trouble a Mentor would be more than happy to help explain the natural limitation of fairness of RP. Just remember if you think the character is so sick he can't be beaten, he's probably too strong.

Anthing Special I need to know?
First off you will not be the best from day one, it takes a long time to get better at rp. Some major things to look for when you are post, what is the character doing when he's speaking, what kind of voice does he have (soft or gruff), does he move smoothly or stiffly. Little details like that can give your character his own persona that other people can percieve while playing with you.
Also, you might want to include some details about what your character is thinking. Part of Rp is giving people certain details so they can get a feel for a character, but also is about remembering that you do not know everything in character that you know out of character. Its that detail that makes rp a bit harder for people to understand.

What is and how do I figure charge time for techniques?
The Charge time for a technique is how many rounds (posts) it takes to build up the energy or concentration for your character to use that technique. Back when rp was new there was no such thing as charge time and ultimate techniques were being thrown around like wildfire and people got in fights over whose ultimate technique was stronger. However, with the advent of the chargetime, it allows people to keep their ultimate technique with little or no chance of blocking, unless the other person has charged their sheild for the same amount of time. This keeps the arguements of this to a minimum.
As for how to figure your charge time. This is rather variable, and thus to keep the calculations fair after you figure yours the Administration goes back and double checks it all. Chargetime is based on the amount of effort and energy that must be gathered into an attack before it can be used. If it takes more energy then it takes longer to use. Just try to use your best judgement for now and you'll pick up on it quickly enough.
Another note on chargetimes. You can only charge ONE technique at a time. This means that there are no doubling up. If you are using a technique then you will not get any charge time for that round. Simple evasion is okay, but double charging is not. For example, if I'm charging my ultimate technique, I can't prep for a fireball and use it at the same time. The fireball would consume some of the stored energy for the ultimate technique, however, I could evade oncoming attacks as long as I didn't do anything that might take my mind from my charging or expend its energy.

How do I do Combat in RP?
Combat rp is like a mixture of your standard text based rp and real life combat. The best way that I've found to do combat rp is to think of yourself in your characters shoes. When making your moves keep in mind the placement of everything around you, and your own body. When you charged forward, did you lean into the attack or did you plant your foot and kind of slide into it. Remember rp fighting is like real life, in that timing and placement is important. You have to keep in mind a multitude of things just like in a real fight.
Body mechanics
Body Reaction
Reaction speed
Timing
force
Motion
Momentum
Possible counter reactions
Reactions for those
Its these things that keeping in mind will help you accel much more in online combat, and even in real combat. Learning either one helps the other greatly. I haven't met anyone yet who being honestly good at one wasn't moderately good at the other. Understanding and paying attention to everything around you is key to winning in an rp fight.
To some pain is an experience like no other, to some it is pleasure and others it is suffering. If you want, I will take that pain from you.
